CHAPTER 11
ZARA
âHowâs everything at home?â My dadâs voice carries to me from the speaker as I lie in bed. Thankfully, the week went by quickly, and Saturday has now arrived. I was planning on sleeping in for once, but my dad decided to call at nine, and I didnât have the heart to ignore him.
âItâs good. Pretty quiet. I was at the cafe last night until almost midnight; they had to kick me out.â I laugh and hear him stifle a laugh on his end.
âSounds like you. How did the party go last week?â Oh my God, that was only a week ago?
âIt was good, surprisingly. Nothing was broken or stolen, and cops werenât called. Iâd say thatâs a good high school party in my book.â I shuffle my body upwards to lean on my bed frame.
âOh, sweetie, youâd never have to worry about that. You know the cops will never come to the house, especially for a house party.â I get the underlying message here. Nobody would ever come because Claire owns this town.
âYeah⦠well, Iâm going to go get ready for my day. Iâve got some assignments to work on that I want to finish today to have the day off tomorrow.â I throw the covers off and slide my feet into my fluffy slippers, walking into the bathroom with my phone in hand.
âSounds good, sweetie. Are you all ready for the fair in a few weeks?â I groan, and he laughs. Usually, Iâm more excited about the fair, but this year something feels different. Maybe Iâm just getting older, and the thought of going to a fair where everyone knows you or being surrounded by kids doesnât sound as appealing as it used to.
âApparently, the Westminster family has donated a few rides, so yeah⦠itâs all peachy.â I canât help but keep the bitterness out of my voice. My dad is about to reply, when the door to my left opens, and a shirtless Nico saunters in.
âGood morning, Princess.â Nico smirks as he scratches his pectorals.
âZara, whoâs that?â My dadâs voice comes out serious, and I canât help the snort that leaves my nose.
âYouâre joking, right, Dad?â I swipe some toothpaste onto my toothbrush and run the tip under the water.
âZara VanWinkle, you know what Iâve said about boys.â I laugh at that because Dad has never once said anything about boys. Heâs only saying that because he thinks he heard someone that isnât his stepson.
âGood morning, Grant.â Nico snickers, and I roll my eyes. He sat quietly because he thought this was funny.
âOh, Nico, itâs you.â He sounds relieved. âRemember what I told you, son.â My head turns to Nico, and I give him a look that would kill if I had that power. I know that my dad and Nico had talked, but I didnât think it had anything to do with me. Why would my dad say something as vague as that while Iâm standing right hereâespecially when it clearly relates to me.
âOh, donât worry, Grant.
